Somerset West Croquet Club Mixed Handicap
Somerset West Croquet Club Mixed Handicap Doubles played on the afternoon Saturday 29th January followed by a braai - greatly enjoyed by all, especially our new members who were guided through tournament conditions with the low handicappers as partners.
Daphne & George Rowland won the trophy which was very fitting as it was also Daphne's birthday!
2011 WP “Open Door” Tournament

The 2011 Western Province Open Door was played at Somerset West Croquet Club over the weekend of 22nd & 23rd January.
As with the Stage Door, the number of entries was only 8 as opposed to a possible field of 12. Sadly some of the top players were unable to compete. However, it was a fiercely fought contest with some very close results.
The 19 point game requires just that extra challenge and touch of endurance in hot and windy conditions. William Louw, champion of 2010, regained the coveted trophy having won all of his matches.
He, and Runner-up Peter Johnson, travel up to Johannesburg Country Club over the weekend of 29th and 30th January to compete in the play-offs for a place in the 2011 World Championships in London.

2011 WPCA “Stage Door” Tournament

Of the 11 players who accepted an invitation to play in the annual 2-day WPCA “Stage Door” golf croquet tournament at Rondebosch Croquet Club on 22 & 23 January, eight finally took the court at the start of play.
The summer heat in conjunction with a blustery South-Easter made playing conditions very demanding, calling for high levels of concentration and accuracy. For all that the players all enjoyed the experience of 19-point level play against others with handicaps in the 3-4 range.
The eventual winner was John Cammell (Fish Hoek) with six wins from seven matches. Mariel de Bie (Kelvin Grove), the tournament’s inaugural champion in 2010 was Runner-up with five wins, among them an absorbing final game between the two, which she won 10-9. Ken Browne (Kelvin Grove) scored the second highest number of hoops and deservedly won an award for a consistently strong performance.
Among the other players who took part were Bob Crane, Annette Ketterer, Daphne Korpershoek and Marilyn Pentz (all from Kelvin Grove) and Lloyd Pascall, the redoubtable 91-year old from Helderberg Village.
