2015 Nationals

Last year the Nationals started with the Golf Croquet event which was played from 16 – 21 November. The venue was the Country Club, Johannesburg which has four courts at its Auckland Park facility. One of the bowls greens had also been made available so originally the plan had been to have five courts in use. As it happened, the lack of rain meant that one of the normal courts did not recover in time from its spring treatment so we were back to four courts. These were generally in excellent condition, apart from a few patched areas on Court C. The court speed was around 11 plummers with the bowls green being faster at 12 plummers.

WCCA Golf Croquet 2016

Wow! What a week. Jam packed full of GC games – lawns full of eager competitors and wonderful weather to accompany all of that.
Well over 40 competitors in total making up a well supported WCCA GC week. Lots of closely competed games made for good spectating and there was a constant stream of visitors and non players to the event.

This year we had some of the overseas AC  competitors staying on to compete and hope to have even more next year. A really encouraging sign was that event winners were never "clear cut" until the finals and even then the results could have gone either way.
There are so many people to thank for the success of this years event, not only Somerset West Croquet Club, for running such a slick event, but also to each and every one of the competitors for taking part – I hope you all enjoyed the event and look forward to seeing you back again next year.

Final Day, WCCA Assoc. Croquet Tournament

Association Croquet WCCA Finals Day Saturday 20th February, 2016
Open Handicap doubles final started the day with a super win by Chris and Christine Wakeham against Jim Field and David Boyd.
Rupert Webb had a good final against Carole Steinberg and came away victorious in the Veterans Singles. Peter Dreyer played another steady game and won the Open Handicap "Y" and Lionel Tibble played yet another entertaining match, beating Jim Field in the Open Handicap "X".

The Open Singles Final was a real crowd pleaser and game shifted back and forth a number of times – in the end George Noble pipped Mike Town to take the title. Other winners included Liz Webb, Carole Steinberg as well as Somerset West and South African croquet on the whole.
We look forward to seeing you all again in 2017. Next week the GC event starts and is bound to be another fabulous week.

Day Seven, WCCA Assoc. Croquet Tournament

Friday 19th February – well, rain is due, it's just a matter of time.
The morning session saw some good games, and some withdrawals sadly, but we sorted the schedule out in the end. Close results in the veterans event and Rupert Webb (who has played so well this week) will be in the final against Carole Steinberg, who has also played well this week.

The rains did eventually arrive in the afternoon but not before we had at least managed to get some hoops run in the deciding doubles matches.
All were no doubt wanting to get back to the clubhouse to enjoy Kitty Carruthers' birthday function, so we did manage to finish most games (in the rain). Finals day tomorrow.

Day Six, WCCA Assoc. Croquet Tournament

Thursday 18th February:
A much cooler day thankfully and a few battle weary players about ...
Mike Town had another good day on the lawns and is looking like a finalist in the Open Singles. Tony Whately had a storming match against Judith in the last session, winning his handicap semi -final in an hour flat.
The doubles is still very much in the balance and we will have a better idea as to the finalists tomorrow.
