History
The Club started in 1985, playing Association Croquet only. They used a green at the Kowie Bowling Club but had to move to the Port Alfred Bowling Club in 1991 and have been part of the Port Alfred Bowling Club ever since.
Golf Croquet was only introduced in 1996 after Allan and Jill Wilson played it in Scotland while visiting family.
Facilities
We have 2 lawns we play on and we really desperately need a third lawn because we have 20 + players every Wednesday and Saturday to play.
We do have space for another lawn but no funds.
Players
There were 10 members in 1991 and today we have 37 affiliated members. We often have visitors popping in to play.
Amongst our members are 3 “Swallows”. We miss them when they have to go back to England.
Val Armstrong has played in 2 Ladies world Championships and Jill Pople once.
David Boyd played in last years World Championships held in Cape Town.
We have 5 qualified referees and hope to have more at the end of the year.
Competitions
Golf Croquet is played 3 times a week and Association once a week. Very few of our members play both codes. There are only 5 regular Association players.
We have hosted the Masters in 1998 and the Nationals twice. We have an annual tournament called the “Highlander” because it is sponsored by a local Pub called the Highlander. We are in our 12th year of hosting this tournament. It proves to be very popular as we had 51 entrants last year. It is always at the end of March beginning of April. Both codes are played at the tournament.
We helped to get St Andrews in East London started and have a yearly competition against them where our top 6 players play against their top 6.
