The Club, with 3 greens and 32 members is friendly and welcoming. The present Chairman, Tim Lewin, with a 0 handicap, is keen to promote Association croquet, and to raise the standard of Golf croquet, so that the club can regain its early impetus and reputation.

Over the last 6-8 years membership has increased. Attendance at Port Alfred's annual Highlander Tournament has continued, following Barry's lead, and we hope to send more members in the future, to represent Natal.

History

The club was founded in 1921, with 52 members, and its president then, Miss S.I.Simpkins, was President of the SACA in 1971 when the club celebrated its Golden Jubilee, and a year later hosted the SA national championship tournament.

Facilities

We have 3 greens, all of which have improved enormously over the last 3 years.

Situated in Alexandra Park, heart of Victorian Maritzburg, the premises are opposite the Oval, and next to, though not part of, the Maritzburg Bowling Club, the clubhouse of which has been recently enlarged, and includes a pub and restaurant.

The greens are scenically pleasing, flanked by shrubs and rockeries, and players on two greens can admire the tall palms in the Mayor's Garden, a venue for weekend wedding photos and tented celebrations like Cars in the Park.

The clubhouse is not large but has tea-making and storage facilities and members have lately had successful braais and bring-and -share lunches, to raise funds and build friendships.

Players

We have 32 members, whose ages range from 60-80.

Most members enjoy 4-5 good, mentally-stimulating games

Competitions

We do not run club competitions or take part in League games. We occasionally take part in inter-club competitions with the Berea club in Durban, but these are more like sociable croquet days, and are not fiercely competitive, Golf croquet is played although interest in Association is growing.

This is a far cry from the 1972 presentation of trophies by the Administrator of Natal at a dinner at the exclusive Victoria Club, but given the enthusiasm and commitment of the present players, we may well regain such glory!
