
History
The Maritzburg Croquet Club was founded on 11th August 1921 with a membership of 58 ladies.The chairman was Lady Steele and Mrs Walters elected as president.
Ladies in those unenlightened days were not allowed to join the Maritzburg Bowling Club, resulting in
the formation of the croquet club by the ladies !!
A clubhouse comprising of a room and verandah with a store room in the basement was built in 1923. A sitting room was added in 1936 and enlarged in 1969.
Location
The Club is situated in Park Drive, adjoining the Alexander Park. below the Maritzburg Bowling Club and opposite the famous Oval cricket ground.
The trees and surroundings of the Club are a constant joy to players and visitors alike as are the rockeries within the club grounds The whole area is scattered with age-old palm trees.
Croquet
3 full size lawns are in use. Social days are on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons starting at 1:30 pm and golf croquet is generally played on these days. Association croquet is played by arrangement on any other day.
Club tournaments are periodically held and are well supported by the members and the occasional visitor.Fun days are held for juniors during the school holidays and are thoroughly enjoyed by the youngsters.
Visitors to the Club are welcome on social days and presently a fee of R 35 is levied per day, which includes tea. Visitors may play their first 3 days free of charge. Full membership is currently R 700 p/a and no further playing or green fees are payable.
Coaching is available for those who would like to start playing the game and is by arrangement with the coach concerned at the time.
General
Croquet sets can be hired at R200 by arrangement for private functions such as weddings and birthday parties etc..
Tea making facilities are available at the Club. Full bar and catering facilities are available at the adjoining Maritzburg Bowling Club, a mere 30 meters away.
Secure vehicle parking facility is under the trees within the Club grounds.
Flat sole shoes must be worn.(bare feet NOT permitted).
Visitors both local and from other clubs are most welcome.
